Over 6000 participants flooded the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in the morning to show their overwhelming support for BIBD’s flagship event for its ALAF programme, the Charity Expedition (CE) for ALAF 2013.
The event started the night before with the BIBD Midnight Marathon which had a selected group of 25 contestants running a full 42km marathon. On the morning of the event, after the Subuh prayers, the participants made their way to the assembly area to prepare themselves for the challenge that they have set out for themselves. Brunei’s own Olympian, Maziah Mahusin was given the honor to flag off the first event of the morning, the 21Km run, while BIBD Managing Director, Yang Mulia Javed Ahmad consented to officiate the start of the 10km run. The 5km event continued and was flagged off by Yang Mulia Awang Junaidi bin Haji Masri, Assistant Managing Director, Brunei Investment Agency (BIA) which was followed by Yang Mulia Dr Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Acting Chief Executive Officer of The Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) launching the 2.5km category. Yang Mulia Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Ja’afar, Deputy Head of Consumer Banking Division and head of the BIBD Corporate Responsibility Team ended off the flagging off event with the launching of the cycling exhibition.
The BIBD CE-ALAF was also graced by His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel, who managed 37mins for his participation in the 5km run, along with Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah, who finished the race some 20 minutes behind.
Winners of the 21km and 10km competitive categories were presented with prizes from the guest of honor, Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong along with the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, who also joined the cycling event, and Yang Mulia Javed Ahmad, BIBD Managing Director.
It was also shared that the BIBD Midnight Marathon 42km runners, who were flagged off the night before, managed to raise a total of just over B$52,700.00. This was based on their special sponsorship program as the money they raised were based on the amount of money pledged by their sponsors times the distance they had ran. Amongst the Midnight Marathon runners, Khairul Syazni Hj Ibrahim was awarded with a HP TouchPad for earning the highest amount of donations, just over B$9,000, from the corporate and individual sponsors of his run.
There was also a lucky draw event for the participants for the BIBD CE-ALAF 2013 that presented them with a chance to win prizes from the many sponsors and supporters of the event. Amongst the prizes offered were a one night stay at the top Brunei Hotels, RBA airline tickets, a Lazyboy chair, kitchen appliances, dinning coupons and so on.
The Charity Expedition (CE) is one of the fund-raising activities held under the ALAF initiative. The ALAF programme, short for “Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future”, is a fund developed in tandem between BIBD and the Ministry of Education towards helping to provide assistance to underprivileged students. BIBD CE-ALAF 2013 is sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Brunei Athletics Association and in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
ALAF is BIBD’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility programme. On top of the Charity Bazaar, the Charity Expedition, carrying the tagline “One step, One pedal, One education’, also consisted of running and a cycling event.

BIBD also partnered with Brunei Press, Fajr Capital Limited, Syarikat Takaful Brunei Darussalam and its subsidiaries, Silverlake Axis Sdn Bhd, Royal Brunei, Kristal FM, Pokka, Orchid Garden Hotel, Aewon, Superwater Marketing, Cityeon, Crystal Time and Ezy Printing & Services to ensure the success of this year’s BIBD CE-ALAF event, along with Singaporean companies; Drummond Printing and Active Networks. The Royal Brunei Police Force also provided its full support along with the Brunei Amateur Association.
