Asia 2015 Day #1

By: Nazurah Noor

All four of the Bruneian teams from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Pusat Latihan Mekanik (PLM) have now successfully completed and passed the tough pre-race Technical Inspections at the Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2015 competition in Luneta Park, Manila, in the Philippines on Saturday, 28th February 2015.

Joining the ranks of yesterday’s Bruneian success in Manila were UBD’s GenNext Harapan and PLM’s Alpha 7 and their battery electric vehicles – the silver black ‘Nakhoda’ vehicles and the golden ‘Panglima Seventy One 77’, respectively.

GenNext Harapan’s vehicle, the ‘Mutiara’, qualified past the rigorous testing of Technical Inspection late on Saturday.

Muhamad Rafiuddin Bin Maidin, who is currently a UBD student reading Masters in Physics by Research, explained his team’s developments: ” In the first attempt, the inspectors found a few issues. Today, we improved the enclosure wall of the vehicle shell to protect our driver from exposure to the brake and wheels. We also adjusted our brakes, seat belts and electrics of the motor.”

Sing Yew, team GenNext Harapan's electrical expert

Then Sing Yew, in charge of the electrical part of team Harapan, commented on this team’s much awaited inspection success on a third attempt: “It’s what we’ve been hoping for over the last few days. Most importantly, we explained very clearly what we have done. It was more to do with demonstrating the depth of our understanding of the car, rather than what we have actually built. The inspectors responded very positively and we even received very good comments.”

He added, “We are feeling excited and very happy. But we now need to focus on the next part, which is to break Mutiara’s previous SEMA record last year.”

In 2014, the ‘Mutiara’ made it to the Top 10 in the SEMA competition’s Battery Electric category, clocking in 112 kilowatts hour of energy for 10 laps in 24 minutes. [click to continue…]
